Derek Clancey Departs Vancouver Canucks for Toronto Maple Leafs

Assistant General Manager Joins Historic Franchise

Derek Clancey, the first person hired by Jim Rutherford after he took over as the Vancouver Canucks' President of Hockey Operations, has left the team to join the Toronto Maple Leafs in a similar role. Clancey's departure was announced on December 15, 2021, by Canucks Sports & Entertainment.

A Key Figure in Vancouver's Rebuild

Clancey played a pivotal role in the Canucks' rebuilding efforts during his tenure. He was responsible for overseeing the team's amateur and professional scouting, as well as player development and contract negotiations. Clancey's contributions were recognized by Rutherford, who praised him for his "hockey acumen and ability to identify and develop talent."

New Chapter in Toronto

Clancey will now join the Maple Leafs organization, one of the most storied franchises in NHL history. He will report to general manager Kyle Dubas and will be responsible for similar duties as he had in Vancouver. The Maple Leafs have long been known for their offensive prowess, and Clancey's scouting and development skills are expected to further enhance their offensive capabilities.

Canucks Continue Search for Replacement

The Canucks are now in the process of searching for a replacement for Clancey. They will likely seek a candidate with a strong background in scouting and player development, as they continue to build towards a competitive future.
